3 Google+ VS Facebook – What is Your Strategy?

GvsFb

Quite often we’re asked the question “what is Google+? do I need to be on it? Is it better than Facebook?” and the like. Without giving a definitive Yes or No answer (nothing is ever that simple is it) below is excerpts from a recent article on Social Media Today including a useful infographic on the subject.

Knowing the audience is going to help you determine how much time to spend here. In general, you want to spend time where your audience is. When it comes to Social Media Marketing, you should allot the largest amount of resources, money, and time where you will get the best results.

Google Plus is:
* 63% male
* Primarily based in the US
* The audience is hard to determine because it is fairly inactive. As everyone with a Gmail account also has a G+ account, it is hard to say how many people actively use it.
* The audience here is quite tech savvy.

WHY IS GOOGLE PLUS SO DARN IMPORTANT?

This is a huge debate in the Internet marketing world. One: it is Google, and Google, whether we like it or not, is the game we are playing. While the network itself might not be as popular or as highly engaged as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or Pinterest, being on Google+ will impact search (which we will get into in later posts). That just might outweigh the fact that your target audience isn’t yet on Google+. And who is to say they won’t be there in a year or two?

Another reason Google+ is important, and why you should be using it as a tool in your arsenal, is because it is still early. Getting into sites earlier gives you an advantage. It gives you time to work out your strategy and grow your network so that, when the rush of people come, you will be ready to deliver the content they are looking for.

Does Google+ drive traffic? In my experience, for some clients, yes, for others no. Taking a look at this blog’s traffic, we have seen some G+ traffic. In general, the traffic has come when it is shared by multiple people via the G+ button on my blog posts. If this blog strikes a cord with a powerful and influential G+ user, then this blog could see a ton of traffic from G+. This is the case with all the BIG 5 networks, which is why it is important to network with Influentials in your industry.

WHAT’S MORE IMPORTANT- PEOPLE IN CIRCLE OR +1?

This is another debate in the internet marketing world. The answer is, both are important in their own way. By having your site +1 often, you are going to do two things: a) you will show Google that you are a “real” site that has valuable content, which in turn will increase your search ranking. And b) your content will be shared with many people and, in the right hands, this can give you a lot of traffic, sales, and new followers. An endorsement is always a good thing. By growing your circle, your official content will be seen by more people. As your community grows and becomes more loyal, you might also see more people +1ing and sharing your content.

Create good content and you will see an increase in both +1 and people who add you to their circle.

LOCAL & G+

As Google runs the local search world, it is very important to have a presence on G+. The first thing you should do is claim your place. You want to show up on Google Maps don’t you? If you already have a G+ business page here is how you can merge it with Google+ Local.

What kind of content works here? As the audience on G+ is geekier, younger and predominantly male, the type of content that works best is good, smart content. As opposed to Pinterest, which is a photo heavy site, and even Facebook, which is also heavy on the media, the Google+ audience likes to talk. There is no limit to the number of characters in G+, as there is on Pinterest, Facebook, and Twitter, so you could write a novel here if you wanted to. (I’m not sure if that would be the best idea, but it is possible.) Remember, with Google+, and all Social Media in general, Conversations Matter!

Now, just because I said that the written word works well here does not mean you should exclude multimedia. Photos and videos look very nice on Google+ as well.

How do you use Google Plus currently?  Do you have a business page and a personal page?  What questions do you have?

1 Google+ Integration Allows Domination Over Twitter

  • March 28, 2013

GooglePlus-550x375

Google Plus, the burgeoning social network from search giant Google, recently overtook Twitter in the list of social platforms with the most active users, despite the latter officially winning the crown for fastest growing network for 2012.

Supposedly, 25% of the global internet population actively use Google Plus in one way or another, compared to the 21% on Twitter. Facebook is still very much in the lead, with 51% using it on a monthly basis.

graph1

Google Plus has a number of killer features which are driving its growth and helping it steal precious attention away from the established social networks.

Holistic integration

The key to Google Plus is its deep integration with most other Google products, such as Search, Gmail, Calendar, Drive and Picasa. Instead of using a social network which requires complex integration with other core web tools, or the use of multiple applications to create a single dashboard experience, Google has built a social platform which is woven tightly with our day-to-day experience of the internet.

This has allowed Google Plus to grow rapidly thanks to a seamless usage flow from mobile via Android through to the desktop browser, providing the complete digital toolset most of us have been craving. And we can see Google continue its war of attrition with the recent launch of Google Keep, clearly targeted at overhauling its tepid Tasks functionality and taking on the Evernote and sundry ToDo apps market.

We can also witness this developing social layer by the automatic creation of a Google Plus brand page for any business present in Google Local,  using the model which Yelp and other listings companies have followed in encouraging brands to take control of a pre-built social presence.

Hangouts

A feature which sets Google Plus apart from other social networks is its group video chat tool,Hangouts. Skype has offered this feature for a while but currently charges for it, and has the disadvantage of having to collate contacts’ Skype IDs before being able to make the call. As a freebie, using Hangouts is a no-brainer.

Google+ Hangouts allows free video conferencing for up to 10 people, and are perfect for client or staff meetings, hosting networking sessions, collaboration on projects, augmenting a virtual work environment. You can also “Enable Hangouts On Air” to stream your live hangout publicly on your Google+ profile, your YouTube channel, your website, and of course, to invited guests. If you activate Google+ premium features, the limit increases to 15 participants for both Hangouts and Hangouts On Air. Hangouts are also increasingly being used to broadcast conference panels live on YouTube.

SEO benefits for Google ranking

Given the tight integration between Google Search and Google Plus, it stands to reason that Google rewards social actions from within its social network with better page ranking in Search. This is particularly visible within Google’s personalised search results  – +1 an article and it is pushed up the rankings for people who have you in their Circles. This is highly effective if one of your articles or sites is +1 or posted on Google Plus by someone who has been added to a large number of Circles.

Ensuring your content is submitted to your brand page, or promoted by your staff to their personal Google Plus networks, becomes a valuable activity which directly affects your SEO. If you already push out content or links to your site via Twitter and Facebook, the impact on search visibility is greatly increased by doing the same on Google Plus, validating participation over other social networks.

Authorship rank

Google offers a way to link up your Plus profile and any content you create for websites and blogs you contribute to. This helps to quickly identify content written by recognised topic authorities in Search by displaying their name and face next to the articles, and will promote their content over others. As well as providing a major incentive for bloggers and journalists to use Google Plus, this by default minimises the impact of participation on other social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.
Top-10-Behaviours-1

We can see the effects of this deep integration in the changes to what users are doing on each of the main three social networks. For example, thanks to Google Plus’ Instant Upload in its mobile app, photos taken on smartphones are automatically uploaded, ready to be shared. Seamless features such as these will affect usage, which we can see on the chart below.

2 Responsive Web Design is the Best Option For Your Mobile SEO Strategy

  • March 13, 2013
  • Blab It Canada
  • · Google · News
Mobile

As smartphone and tablet adoption rapidly increases, so does the importance of mobile-friendly websites.

If SEO is a core component of your digital marketing strategy, having a mobile–friendly website is becoming essential.

Mobile sales have already overtaken desktop sales, and mobile Internet usage is predicted to overtake desktop internet usage by 2014. It is only logical that mobile search will overtake desktop search at some point in the near future as well.

Since 67 percent of users claim they are more likely to purchase from a mobile-friendly website, companies that rely on SEO are wise to begin making the transition to mobile-friendly websites, and responsive web design specifically.

The argument between whether to choose aresponsive website or a separate mobile website is a highly debated topic. However, the truth is that both options have their pros and cons.

The option that is best for your business depends on many factors, such as the purpose of the website, the intended target audience, and whether SEO is a factor.

If SEO is a factor, here are three reasons why responsive web design is the best option for your mobile SEO strategy.

Recommended By Google

With 67 percent search market share, when Google speaks, search marketers listen. Google states that responsive web design is its recommended mobile configuration, and even goes so far as to refer to responsive web design as the industry best practice.

This is because responsive design sites have one URL and the same HTML, regardless of device, which makes it easier and more efficient for Google to crawl, index, and organize content. Contrast this with a separate mobile site which has a different URL and different HTML than its desktop counterpart, requiring Google to crawl and index multiple versions of the same site.

Additionally, Google prefers responsive web design because content that lives on one website and one URL is much easier for users to share, interact with, and link to than content that lives on a separate mobile site.

Take for example a mobile user who shares content from a mobile site with a friend on Facebook who then accesses that content using a desktop, which results in that user viewing a stripped down mobile site on their desktop. This creates a less than optimal user-experience, and because of the large emphasis Google is now placing on user-experience as a ranking factor, this is essential to take into account with regards to SEO.

One Website, Many Devices

One of the most appealing aspects of responsive web design is that a responsive website can provide a great user-experience across many devices and screen sizes. This is an important characteristic, since it is impossible to anticipate all the devices and screen sizes searchers will use to access your site. A site that works well regardless of these variables will provide a better and more consistent user-experience than a separate mobile site that is designed for a specific device and screen size.

Let’s take the following example. Someone searches for a product on their smartphone during a lunch break at work. They find a site that has the product they’re looking for, and decide to continue researching this product on the same site when they get home. Except, when they get home, they will use their desktop instead of their smartphone.

If the site in this example is responsive, this person will have a positive user-experience when transitioning from mobile to desktop because they will view the same site on their desktop as they did on their smartphone. On the other hand, if the site is a dedicated mobile site, this person will become frustrated with the fact that they have to locate the desktop version of the site, and find the product all over again.

Easier to Manage

Having a separate desktop and mobile site requires having separate SEO campaigns. Managing one site and one SEO campaign is far easier than managing two sites and two SEO campaigns. This is a key advantage a responsive website has over a separate mobile site.

That being said, there are benefits to having a mobile-specific SEO strategy, such as optimizing for keywords that are more likely to be searched when someone is on their smartphone.

For example, someone performing a mobile search for a local restaurant may be more inclined to use the word “nearby” in their search query. However, a separate mobile site is not a requirement for a mobile SEO strategy, and there’s no reason why mobile-specific keywords can’t be incorporated into a responsive design site as well.

Conclusion

Responsive web design is recommended by Google, it allows one website to provide a great user-experience across many devices and screen sizes, and it also makes managing your SEO strategy easier. For these reasons, responsive web design is the best option for your mobile SEO strategy

google-plus-update

Google+ has rolled out new features for its profile and pages, including a “Local” reviews tab and larger cover photos, one day ahead of Facebook’s big News Feed announcement.

The company announced in a Google+ post on Wednesday that users will gradually start to see some new features added throughout the social network. Among the changes is a new tab for local reviews — a move in line with Google’s efforts to expand local search across its platforms.

Google Plus Local Tab

Similar to photos and +1 buttons, users will be able to highlight reviews and favorite restaurants (This option can also be hidden via the settings button).

Google Plus Redesign

Members will also start to see larger cover photos with a better aspect ratio. Now, cover photos display 2120 pixels by 1192 pixels at a 16:9 ratio when fully expanded. “This way more images can be used as cover photos, and there’s more room for your selection to shine,” Google said.

Google Plus About Redesign

The company is also making it easier for users to edit information via the About tab, which now includes options to edit Education, Work, Links and Places. You can still share specific fields with certain circles or keep them private.

0 Google Worried Samsung Is Getting Too Powerful

  • February 26, 2013

Samsung-Google

Samsung has arguably been the biggest success story for the Android operating system to date, but Google is apparently starting to worry that Samsung has gotten too powerful for its own good.

The Wall Street Journal reports hearing from multiple sources that Google execs are concerned that Samsung’s increasing dominance among Android products — the manufacturer accounts for 40% of Android devices sold — could give it more leverage to demand a greater cut of Google’s growing mobile ad business.

“Several people familiar with the relationship between the companies said Google fears that Samsung will demand a greater share of the online-advertising revenue that Google generates from its Web-search engine,” the Journal reports. “Samsung in the past has received more than 10% of such revenue, one of the people said. Samsung has signaled to Google that it might want more.”

In fact, Google is concerned enough about Samsung becoming too powerful that it acquired Motorola Mobility partly as a defensive measure to have its own Android devices that can compete with Samsung and keep the latter in check. Andy Rubin, Google’s mobile chief and the man behind Android, is said to have told others at the company that the Motorola acquisition is a “kind of insurance policy against a manufacturer such as Samsung gaining too much power over Android.”

0 Video look at Google's impressive Chromebook Pixel

Reblogged from GigaOM:

Perhaps I've been a Google Chromebook(s goog) user for too long now because I'm nearly sold on the new Chromebook Pixel. I know it sounds crazy -- who would pay $1,299 for a laptop that you can't install software on -- but anyone using a Chrome OS device today would be blown away by this machine. Simply put: It runs rings around all of the prior Chromebooks and is exceptionally better in every way.

1 Google Glass is Coming!

  • February 20, 2013

sergey-brin-with-google-glasses

Today Google turned the heat up on a long simmering project. Google Glass, the possibly game-changing, definitely dorky wearable computer, is looking just about ready for prime-time. Google has begun engaging developers, who have been sworn to secrecy, in hack-a-thons to pump out Glass apps.

Here is today’s promo video, shot entirely through Google Glass glasses:

Yes, it’s another Apple-esque inspirational tear-jerking montage. But what does it actually tell us about the device and its uses?

  • Glass seems like it’ll enable a decent first go at augmented reality: the much-hyped but little-realized technology that layers digital information on top of what our eyeballs perceive. Assuming that Google is showing off its best stuff here, it looks like augmented reality will mostly consist of GPS navigation apps, to start.
  • Real-time video streaming is pushed hard in the video. This is both nothing new and very cool. On the one hand, we can already stream videos from our phones to remote viewers. But putting this function into a pair of glasses lets us literally show others the world through our eyes. Whether it’s used to vicariously experience fencing, skydiving, or a party for grandma held in another country, this seems like a very special app. Head trip alert: while you’re beaming what you see to a remote viewer’s eyeballs, they’re webcamming their reactions into the top corner of your Google Glass display.  You’re not watching them watching you, you’re watching them watching as you. Trippy!
  • Existing voice-commanded Google/Android apps seem ported over. “Google Goggles” has been a Labs app for years now.  With varying results, it did things like take a picture you just shot of a menu in Japanese and instantly translate it. On Glass, this gets a bit more exciting, especially when combined with instant voice translation. I’d like to see a field test before setting off abroad with it, though.

Critics are already asking what the big deal is with Google Glass. What can it do that smartphones can’t? I don’t share this cynicism. If Google Glass does nothing but put a smartphones’ functionality into our sightlines, it will be an ergonomic triumph. I’d like to think that if good design can do nothing else, it can liberate us from staring at our palms every two minutes.

Google has yet to set a release date for Glass, but if you tell them why you’re super special and really, really deserve to get one first, they just might let you and 7,999 other lucky souls buy one soon for $1,500. Applications are being taken here.

According to our own tests and many reports on Twitter, Gmail and other Google services, such as Google Play, Google Drive, Google Calendar, and Chrome Sync, appear to be down for many users. While many people are experiencing the outage, it is not a total outage. The authentication system is probably to blame.

Some users report that their Chrome browsers are crashing when they load gmail.com.
